Cyclone Fengal: Heavy Rains Lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Cyclone Fengal Updates: Cyclone Fengal made landfall over the northern coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Saturday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported. By midnight, the storm remained stationary, causing widespread rain and wind damage in affected areas. In its latest update at 3 a.m. on Sunday, IMD forecasted that the storm would weaken into a deep depression by 6 a.m.

Heavy Rains in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry experienced relentless heavy rains and gusty winds on Saturday. The Revenue and Disaster Management Minister of Tamil Nadu, KKSSR Ramachandran, shared that no significant damages were reported immediately, though the assessment is ongoing.

In Chennai, the cyclone’s impact was felt acutely, with residential areas and hospitals inundated due to waterlogging. Authorities set up eight relief camps for around 200 displaced people from low-lying areas. To ensure people received essentials, the Greater Chennai Corporation provided food to over 2,32,000 residents.

Chennai Airport Temporarily Closed

Chennai Airport suspended its operations on Saturday evening due to waterlogging on two runways and a taxiway. The airport remained closed until 4 a.m. on Sunday.

Airlines canceled 55 flights and diverted 19 others, including domestic and international services. Earlier in the day, delays were reported for at least 12 flights. The temporary suspension of operations significantly affected travelers, especially during the holiday season.

Rain-Related Deaths in Chennai

The cyclone claimed three lives in Chennai due to electrocution in rain-related incidents. One of the victims was a migrant worker who tragically lost his life while attempting to withdraw cash from an ATM. His body was later discovered floating near the machine.

Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid waterlogged areas to prevent further tragedies.

Flood Prevention Efforts in Chennai

Learning from the devastating 2015 floods, Chennai residents and officials took preventive measures to minimize damage. Vehicles were parked on flyovers and underpasses to avoid water damage. However, several subways had to be temporarily closed.

The city’s civic body ramped up its efforts, ensuring quick responses to rescue operations and maintaining food distribution during the crisis.

Puducherry Experiences Cyclone Impact

Despite Cyclone Fengal’s landfall near Puducherry, officials reported no major damages in the union territory. The Puducherry administration had earlier alerted 12 lakh residents through SMS to prepare for the storm.

Though some areas experienced heavy rainfall and wind damage, swift communication and precautionary measures helped prevent significant casualties or property loss.

Cyclone Tracker and IMD Updates

As of 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Cyclone Fengal remained centered over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with wind speeds ranging from 65 to 75 km/h, gusting to 85 km/h. IMD predicted that the cyclone would gradually weaken as it moved west-southwest.

The slow movement of the storm led to persistent heavy rainfall in the affected regions, disrupting daily life. IMD continues to monitor the situation and has advised people to follow official weather updates closely.
