Cyclone Fengal: Storm will come today; Schools and colleges closed and red alert issued, which areas are at risk

Cyclone Fengal Updates: Cyclone Fengal, which has developed over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall this afternoon, November 30, 2024, between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted wind speeds ranging between 70-80 kmph and possibly reaching 90 kmph as it crosses the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast.

At present, the cyclone is located about 210 km south-east of Chennai and is moving west-north-west. The authorities have warned residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Schools and colleges in Puducherry have been ordered to remain closed today as a precautionary measure.

Weather Changes and Alerts Issued Due to Cyclone Fengal

Due to Cyclone Fengal, weather changes have already been observed in Chennai and other coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Puducherry is experiencing high tides and intermittent rain.

  • Red Alert: Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry.
  • Orange Alert: Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal.
  • Other Affected Areas: Isolated heavy rain has been forecast in Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchirapalli, and Sivaganga.

Chennai city and its suburbs experienced a break in rainfall after continuous downpours over the past few days. However, Mahabalipuram witnessed heavy rains since late last evening.

Sea Conditions and Fishermen Advisory

The IMD has warned that the sea conditions will remain very rough with 7-8 feet high tides observed in several areas. Fishermen have been advised to anchor their boats in safe locations and avoid venturing into the sea until further notice.

Preparedness and Precautions

The Tamil Nadu government has placed its disaster management machinery on high alert. District Magistrate A. Kulothungan has held review meetings with officials from public works, police, and local administration to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency response plans.

In Puducherry, emergency teams are on standby to handle any potential damage caused by the cyclone. Relief materials such as food, water, and medical supplies have been pre-positioned in vulnerable areas.
